Dungeon Master was distributed on a floppy disk that had a specific weak sector that would randomly return 1 or 0 when read. The game would periodically read that sector and, if it returned the same bit x times in a row, it would kill your entire party. When copying the disk, the original would read either 1 or 0 and then write that value in that specific sector, meaning the copy would always return 1 or 0.

The check was random, hidden in graphics files, and this, combined with some obfuscation and some more copy protection, meant it took over a year for the game to get cracked. A record at the time.

The dev claimed that the time and effort spent on the protection scheme was worth it as it allowed the game to keep selling through typical sales channels for much longer than usual.

I’m not dumb enough to share important private information on websites that don’t require it.

I use it for important things that require actual security. Everything else gets the one password treatment.

Linux was at that point two decades ago. The dogmatic infighting between Linux developers users is ultimately what prevents Linux from being actually useful as a desktop OS.

My favorite part of Linux troubleshooting is you get to enter all these command line commands that barely make sense and in the end nothing works because they’re meant for glibktw-6.32ajqx_rc4.1 but in the three weeks since that obscure forum post was made, every distro moved to glibktw-6.32ajqx_mgtk+2 and nothing works anymore.

The problem isn’t that there isn’t smart women and minorities, they exist. They’re just crushed by the system. DEI won’t solve that. DEI won’t women and minorities the resources to achieve their dreams, DEI won’t give handicapped people access to a better life.

DEI is a bandaid on a festering, maggot filled wound. People slap it on and are like “wow, what a good job”, and it drives me crazy.

Social studies are about worth as much as the paper they’re written on. 60 years ago studies said black people were inferior. In 60 years it’ll be something else. They always match the era they were made in.

The only true solution to inequality is actual action against the cause of inequality, not some feelgood quarterly corporate email asking employees to not be openly racist at work.

DEI is nothing more than an acceptable form of racism.

Hiring people to meet quotas does not make a society better and does nothing to fix the root cause of inequalities.

Free access to quality education, healthcare and funding higher education for the people who can’t afford it is how you fix things for the better. This is the future and good.

DEI is the equivalent of a small band aid over a putrid, gaping wound.

The machine I have to use at work was updated to windows 10 two months ago. One of the software we use for our job is hosted on a VM running Windows 98.

I have yet to use an alternate search engine for any length of time (and i’ve tried a few) and think “ah yes, this was the kind of results I expected from my search”, they’re systematically worse than google, which is an incredible achievement, considering how absolute garbage google is nowadays.

Brave, which i’m using now, is atrocious with that. The amount of irrelevant bullshit it throws at you before getting to the stuff you are actually looking for is actually incredible.

Other search engines are even worse than Google lmao. Brave consistently provide literally the worst results. Duck duck go same.

To get a decent result on Google, you have to wade through 2 pages of ads, 4 pages of sponsored content, and maybe the first good result is on page 10.

ChatGPT does a good job at filtering most of the bullshit.
