Wow, who could have seen that coming?

What are you even talking about? If anybody is denying the existence of a challenge, it’s you through your insistence that there is no future worth living without the unrelenting integration and consumption of technology.

Don’t get me wrong, I rely on these technologies as much as the next. In fact, as a software engineer, it’s my livelihood and I’m going to support any means to keep it aligned with my own values.

But I also recognize that I am a small fish in a vast ocean and that my most reliable weapon against tyranny is my own free will. If push comes to shove then I can and will simply refuse to follow society into the techno-feudalist hellscape we’re moving towards.

You call it being left behind; I call it liberation.

Sounds like you’re trying your hardest to convince yourself that it’s worth selling your soul for whatever they’re offering. If that’s the case then they’ve already won and it’s only a matter of time before your freedoms are stripped away and you willfully become a virtual slave for fear of missing out on whatever prosperity is being promised.

Left behind? If you’ve deemed a system to be so necessary that refusing to abandon your privacy at its behest means you are condemned to live in obsolescence, then you’re only reinforcing the idea that we must surrender our rights for the benefits of the system.

I’m old enough to have lived in a world without the internet and if it’s going in a direction that demands I surrender my right to privacy then I’ll return to a life without the internet. I won’t be alone and just like Lemmy I’m confident we’ll build an alternative that aligns with our values.

And so what? Many of us left Reddit because it killed 3rd party apps to force us onto its shitty mobile app. Did it burn without us? No, I doubt they even noticed. Does that make our departure meaningless? Also no, we built something better here.

Too late I’m already on Linux and I only regret not doing it sooner

Great! I finally have an excuse to take that hiatus I’ve been meaning to do for the past several years. You’ve got my number when everything breaks! Oh, and when it does my rate is gonna be double what it is now.

I just installed Linux Mint last weekend. Working great so far!

My Linux journey over the last ~18 hours:

I followed a YouTube video on how to install Linux Mint on a flash drive last night around 11pm and got it to post before going to bed. This morning I woke up at 9am, made coffee, then spun up my new OS, configured my system settings, played around with some extensions, then downloaded Steam and a few games and had at it with no fuss.

Big Brother can suck my dick.

I was chatting with some folks the other day and somebody was going on about how they had gotten asymptomatic long-COVID from the vaccine. When asked about her sources her response was that AI had pointed her to studies and you could viscerally feel everybody else’s cringe.

Maybe something’s going over my head but my understanding is a VPN can get you around region locks but you still have to pay for the streaming service to access it.

Unless you’re talking about using a VPN to pirate, which I’ve definitely done without a VPN, albeit a long time ago.

Don’t forget, Hulu is owned by Disney too. Honestly, I’m done with video streaming at least for a while. I never have time anymore to watch anything so it’s just a money suck and physical media is better anyway.

We’re investigating private companies for bias now? Are Truth Social and Fox News next??

Third one in a little over two years. They say it’s to keep up with inflation as if they’re a retail store operating on razor thin margins and people accept that. Meanwhile, they’re donating to fascist political parties and shafting artists by leveraging loopholes to pay out fewer royalties.

I just drove through Wyoming and it’s a prime spot for wind turbines. Too bad it’s also prime for coal mining…

I stopped using Spotify long ago because of their shitty business practices. Producing a product they killed support for within just a couple years without reimbursing customers and producing huge amounts of e-waste. Jacking their subscription prices twice in one year. Apparently, they also donated to Trump despite not being an American company?? That’s to say nothing of their shitty recommendation algorithm, which just plays your most played tracks over and over. Good riddance.

For those interested, I use Tidal now. I’m satisfied with, their recommendation algo is fine and the higher quality streaming is really nice but nothing I’ve used has ever been as good as Google Play Music, I found so much good music though that service and could upload whatever I was missing. Once Tidal inevitably pisses me off, I’m going to move on to self hosting.
