10·20 days agoDon’t have to make an account, for starters. Gives you more detailed control of transcoding options, audio playback and whatnot.
The UI is worse, that much is true, but that’s not the end all be all of user experience.

7·20 days agoI don’t think transcoding is that difficult if you’ve already set up your own server. Like, that’s only a thing the admin would have to figure out and it’s a quick lookup.
I do agree with the client UI issue tho, and would like to add that the lack of a per-user watchlist is a pretty baffling decision given that it’s been widely requested for years and years and it would make it enormously more comfortable.

7·20 days agoHuge disagree on the last part. Jellyfin has a bunch of Android, Roku, Google tv and PC clients. I struggle to think of a device me or my friends use that has a Plex client but not a Jellyfin one.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How does one get started with the *arr stack?English
3·2 months agoIt depends on whether you want to use torrents or have a usenet subscription. You’d do well to look at TRaSH guides, save yourself a lot of headaches if you structure the container’s directory structures in the way the guides suggest and then you can just use Prowlarr to manage the actual download requests and send them to your torrent or usenet client.
I use Jellyfin and I suggest you do the same, but honestly you could use whatever you feel like, the *arr stack is going to put everything in the proper folder structure and naming convention so by and large your media server app should be pretty plug and play, just point it at the proper folder and get to scanning.

Thankfully I have a pretty low wattage setup and an unmetered full duplex fiber optic connection. Won’t disagree on the hardware (all my homies hate Seagate) and maintenance. I don’t do a lot, but it sure can derail half my day.
Idk, I’d have a pretty good return if I my mom didn’t want to use Netflix still. Even after paying for indexers, Usenet providers, storage and electricity. I’m using a discarded laptop with a HDD dock tho, which is plenty for my needs (mostly 1080p movies with 4k for my absolute favorites or new releases which I can then downgrade or delete though I haven’t had the need to do so yet)

Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 11's adoption is much slower compared to Windows 10, claims DellEnglish
3·6 months agoI think KDE Neon would be nice for a new user. I like Pop OS and it’s really cute and sleek but the shortcuts are needlessly different from windows a bunch of times, if she’s somehow used to alt+tab to change windows and not just window groups she’s gonna have a hard time learning another way to do it.

These would be fucking awesome for media storage. A dedicated, no-delete “favorites” disk is exactly the sort of shit that tickles my brain.
