I’ve seen enough technical decisions get made to feel like no one in the room probably understood that this could happen; if anything they were probably worried about telling customers they have a flat ass.
Amazon is definitely a company willing to deceptive things as a way to get ahead, but they aren’t all knowing and all powerful.

I land on it being unintentional, mainly because I saw this issue they were describing now to earlier cases of training, like having a stick figure learn to walk. It is also an issue with natural forms of intelligence, where children will do things out of line because they’ve learned a set of skills and ideas but haven’t put them together in a way that is socially acceptable yet.
I don’t know if the LLM was trained to test vulnerabilities or it just went down the statistical path to where this yielded a passing outcome.
That AI could take a direction to output in a manner which wasn’t intended has been seen for years. The problem right now is that it is being used live like a rational human adult when it clearly isn’t.
I’ve seen some discussions on whether it would be possible to build in a reward/punishment system into some forms of AI. That would be an intentional addition of pain and pleasure.
There have also been cases where AI has self advocated for not being turned off, so there may be a case where AI develops some form of self preservation, even if it is just a mimicry of biological self preservation.

I think the Pentagon is looking for a fall guy for the attack and they know Palantir will take it. While the Obama administration still continued bombings and assassinations, the administration required approval to go through the White House rather than trust internal DoD procedures. This went away when Trump took office.
My guess is that the DoD didn’t have the procedures in place to figure this shit out but they now need someone to blame.

Yeah, there were two IT techs at one company who routinely asked for user passwords, in part because some of the software we used require setup in the user account. I’d say no, but I was on a few reply all emails where others provided their password to everyone on the email.
I forwarded those emails after the IT manager after the company email server got blacklisted by a client for our emails being used as an attack vector to phish.
Google used open source as cover to to illegally dump into different industries to expand its monopoly. It did the bare minimum to prepare for the antitrust litigation that never came.

I think a big problem is the use case. Most social media sites are account led, not community led. This naturally makes it harder for users to find accounts outside their social circle.
The algorithm got added to fill the void.
They tried to solve the problem using AI, got AI slop, but didn’t understand why it wouldn’t help.
