Linux@programming.dev•I ditched Linux for Windows 11 for one week - and found 9 big problemsEnglish
53·1 year agoThat doesn’t mean much tho, because authoritarian is basically a buzzword. Every single state in existence is authoritarian by nature. I recommend the very short read “On Authority” by Engels. That being said, if you are worried about your data being used, specially for nefarious reasons, being concerned with the US having access to it is pretty valid since they are the country on earth that loves to invade and bomb anyone that dares breath wrong, but I can’t see the same worry about other countries, specially China being very valid.

??? It being Chinese has fuck all to do with Opera’s issues.
And for anyone reading, just use Zen Browser, it is amazing.
Sure thing!
This comment ended up being very big and I’m not good at formatting, it would be better if I passed it through an LLM to format it nicely, but this already took a lot of effort and I would need to edit that output too, so I’ll leave it as it is.
Lil disclaimer: The names of things might be a bit different since I use my system in Portuguese and I’m translating it myself for this comment. And there’s still things I didn’t do like trying to add transparency to GTK4 apps and things I didn’t include cause I haven’t finished yet, like modifying the Midnight Catppuccin theme for Discord and the Catppuccin theme for Zen Browser, the general theme also wasn’t extensively tested, so there might be a few issues here and there. Lastly, if there’s any settings I didn’t talk about, leave it as default.
- In Color and themes > Global Theme Vapor came with Bazzite, but you can use Breeze or something else you like
- In Color and themes > Colors I have set Highlight color from wallpaper and I downloaded the Catppuccin Macchiato Sky color scheme from here which should go in
~/.local/share/color-schemes. I modified it myself to add transparency and since I didn’t fork it and upload to GitHub, I can’t really distribute it without the license, so here’s the changes I did, they are minimal, so it should be fairly quick to copy (the 4th number is the alpha channel, you can change it to alter the transparency of elements if you wish):- Line 12:
Color=36, 39, 58, 255 - Line 23:

- Darkly have instructions for how to install in the readme. If you’re on an atomic/immutable distro, layering the package is probably the easiest way to install it, it’s what I did
- In Color and themes > Application Style I did this:
- Edit Darkly
- Tabs > enable Use highlight color as selected tab background and Use brighter close icon
- Frames > enable Transparent Dolphin view
- Transparency > Menu: 50%, Sidebar: 66%, Menubar: 50%, Toolbar: 66%, Tabbar: 100%
- Shadow > disable Draw widget shadow and Draw shadow under toolbar
- In Color and themes > Window decorations I did this:
- Edit Darkly
- General > Title alignment: Center (Full Width)
- Icons I downloaded from Colors and Themes > Icons > Get new > Fluent icon theme
- Inter fonts can be downloaded from here or here. Iosevka fonts can be downloaded from here or here. After that I have it set like this in Text and fonts > Fonts:
- General: Inter 10pt
- Monospaced: Iosevka 12pt
- Small: Inter 8pt
- Menu: Inter 10pt
- Window Title: Inter 10pt
- Anti-aliasing: Enabled
- Subpixel Rendering: None
- Hinting: Slight
- You can then download and install Lucidglyph with the instructions on the readme. If you’re on an atomic/immutable distro, don’t forget to use the User Mode installation
- For Better Blur it’s the same thing I said for Darkly, I also layered the copr repo since it was easier. After that, in Window management > Desktop Effects:
- Disable Blur > Apply
- Enable Better Blur > Apply > config Better Blur
- General > Blur strength: 6th stop, Noise strength: 0 > disable Window opacity affects blur
- Force blur > mark Blur all except matching > enable Blur window decorations as well and Blur menus
- Rounded corners > Window top and Window bottom are both set at 16,00 (because of GTK4 apps), Menu and Dock are both at 6,00
- Panel Colorizer can be installed either from source or by Right clicking Plasma Panel > Add or manage widgets > Get new > Panel Colorizer. Then here’s what I did in it:
- Add to Plasma Panel
- Right click its icon > mark to make it Invisible
- Right click an empty space on the Panel > Panel Colorizer Settings
- Appearance > enable Background and Shadow > Opacity: 0,35
- Text and icon fixes > mark the tray icons you want to be monochrome with Effect
- For the Shell, the font I’m using is Iosevka Term 12 and I’m using Starship with Pastel Powerline, but I just saw that there is also a Catppuccin Powerline, so that’s even better. I’m also using Nushell if you’re interested.
- For Kate and KWrite if you use them, you’ll need to edit the Catppuccin Macchiato theme on the settings of one of the apps to add alpha channels with the color picker, it’s easy to do. I won’t put it here because I’m not fully satisfied with the results I got.
- One thing I did for Zen Browser even tho I haven’t finished the theme editing, is enable
zen.widget.linux.transparencyinabout:config - Zed editor has an extension which is Catppuccin with Blur you can find inside the app, which is great.
Took me a while to warm up to it, but after using it for months now, every time I try another color scheme I go back to the lovely Catppuccin lol
Don’t call me out like that lol. Also Atuin is pretty cool for this as you are showed a list of the commands used when you press ⬆️.

5·1 year agoNah, you’re excusing his behavior. He could have cursed in Swedish instead of using a racially charged word. The fact that he knew the word, knew it was bad, it came to his mind and used it is too much to be a “heated” moment.
And even if it was, there’s literally no excuses. His content is in English and his main audience is USians.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Did PewDiePie Just Crack the Code for How to Present Libre Software?
6·1 year agoSure thing. These people were both on his YouTube comments and on his subreddit. Tho I remember it being worse at the subreddit.
The issue is not that Nazis will watch his content, that’s outside of anyone’s control, but that his content funnels people into right-wing ideologies, which attracts these types of people.
The video “The PewDiePipeline” that I linked talks about this better than I could.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Did PewDiePie Just Crack the Code for How to Present Libre Software?
3·1 year agoYes because in this case it’s relevant. You are right that being mentioned by a bad person is not necessarily proof of anything. But like I said, in this case it is connected to the content and community that PewDiePie has.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Did PewDiePie Just Crack the Code for How to Present Libre Software?
91·1 year agoIf you can’t see how he hosting Shapiro and Musk, using right wing memes and rethoric, endorsing a fascist author, and allowing Nazis and other right-wingers to fester in his community is directly related with why that POS shooter mentioned him, that is precisely the problem.
That’s a common excuse used to defend the guy over and over again like it is just some isolated incident and not connected to the content he produces and the community he fosters.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Did PewDiePie Just Crack the Code for How to Present Libre Software?English
91·1 year agoI used to watch him years ago. He has a very young and impressionable audience which he constantly feeds memes with right-wing rethoric.
To list a few of the stuff I remember:
- He said the N word hard R;
- He paid people on Fiverr to show a sign saying “Death to all Jews” or something like that, where he laughed at the reveal. He said it was to prove a point that you could do harmful shit with that type of online service, but all it ended up doing was getting the guys banned from the platform and served to signal to Nazis that he would host such content;
- He allowed right-wingers to fester in his community, 4chan specially really liked the guy;
- He hosted both Ben Shapiro and Elon Musk in his channel for a “meme review”;
- He has stated multiple times that his favorite author is Mishima, a Japanese fascist, not only in the past, but also in the last year at least;
- He used to stream on some crypto bullshit site, which I don’t remember the name;
- His whole campaign against the Indian conglomerate T-Series lead not only to racist comments but also to a very racist music video he did;
- The Christchurch shooter mentioned him in a video. And while being mentioned by a shooter doesn’t necessarily mean he’s an issue, in this case it’s extremely relevant since it’s pretty clear that is a byproduct of his politics and the community he has.
There’s probably much more that I either don’t remember or don’t know about, but this is more than enough to understand where he stands politically and the harm he causes.
I also recommend the video: The PewDiePipeline.
The bridge thing is just the one that’s mostly known about and for good reason. He was a Swedish guy playing PUBG on the internet, there was no conceivable way in that situation that he should have thought of the N word nor outright said it, specially with a hard r.
I don’t know about his current content and honestly I don’t care, I used to watch him when I was young and naive. What I know is that recently, I believe a couple months ago, he did a video praising Mishima again, so that’s a pretty big indicative to me that he is still the same person or at least still hold the same beliefs.
Unless he comes out denouncing all the shit and harm he has caused and makes a genuine effort to stray away from that, I won’t hold a candle to him. The only other youtuber/influencer like him that I know that actually did that is iDubbbz.
If you want to know more about Mishima himself, the relationship of his image with the alt right, and why it is relevant for knowing about PewDiePie’s political beliefs, there’s this article in the Jacobin about it.
I wonder what kind of phenomenon causes this and if there is any psychological research behind that.
I never seen any research on that, but I hope there is. I’ll take a wild guess and say that it’s probably linked to both, the way internet changed how we interact with people, and the hyper-individualization of capitalism.
And thanks for the link to the essay comrade, I’ll certainly read it!
I’m glad to be able to inform!
Like the comments above, they’re seeing what looks like a petty morality crusade years after a guy who makes stupid videos let a bad word slip, which, yeah, looks ridiculous out of context.
Yep, but there is also a weird parasocial relationship a lot of people have with him where everything wrong he does is just an oopsie, to the point where even when someone has the full context of what I mentioned, a lot of people can’t seem to add 1 + 1 and come to the conclusion that it isn’t just a bunch of mistakes, but rather who he is as a person. The pattern of repetition with him is always muffled by the constant barrage of people that will not hold him accountable, if you visit Reddit right now you will see just that on every Linux related sub.
It’s also a very chicken-or-egg question I think. I’m genuinely curious: Do internet/podcast/streamer celebrities get their status from already being like this, and signaling the fashy bros club that they’re ready to join the “in group” , or do they get pulled and influenced into that circle because they innocently found success from stupid videos?
It’s honestly both. The algorithm on social media platforms will favor right-wing content for a myriad of reasons, ranging from simply being part of the status quo and/or playing into suppressed prejudice of easily impressionable/influenceable people, all the way to the fact that the right is the one that holds the means to create, publicize and boost this type of content, while the left usually do not have the resources needed to do so, you can look at Prager U in the US for example, or think-tanks like Brasil Paralelo here in Brasil, where they will create a lot of very right-wing content and push it hard into the masses, usually buying a shitload of ads that will end up everywhere, included in leftist content on YouTube for example.
The Internet used to be about cats and gaming used to be a hobby divorced from political office except when someone tried to argue they “cause violence” every few years.
Yeah, the monopolization of the internet sucks, hopefully it’s not impossible to revert that. Federated social media like Lemmy here (yay!) is a good step to that, but I hope more and more people will just create websites for their interests.
I’ll disagree on the gaming point tho, gaming, like every media has always been political, it’s just that now-a-days there is a large portion of reactionary content in the pop culture and gaming communities where everything is “woke” and whatnot. And even when the content of the game might not have been political by themselves, like Tetris for example, the conditions surrounding its inception and distribution certainly were.
There is also the issue with gaming journalism, where it ends up being just a corp controlled ad for the games rather than being actual critic of the media being played. It’s like a dystopian version of cinema where the content and the message doesn’t matter, only that you help sell it to maintain your brand on the good side of these gigantic publishers.
Except PewDiePie is not that. Sure he apologized for saying the N word hard-r. But then proceeded to create a whole racist campaign against India in the name of fighting the corpo T-Series where he made one of the most racist songs I’ve ever heard.
Then there’s the whole antisemitic Fiverr thing where if he genuinely did it to prove that any heinous shit could happen there, he still didn’t need to do it that way.
Then there’s Musk and Shapiro in his channel.
Then there’s the Nazis in his audience.
Then you have the bunch of incel and machist memes he reacted and laughed too constantly in his channel.
Then you have that he has gone on record saying more than once that his favorite author is the Japanese fascist Yukio Mishima.
And to top it all off you have the Christchurch shooter shouting him out.
PewDiePie has been a right wing fucker that has eased a shit ton of young people into the alt-right pipeline for years. The fact that people keep excusing him is just fucked up to no end.
Watch the video The PewDiePiepeline on YouTube.

I have been using Hayase for anime. Just found out they got a automatic DMCA strike on GitHub they are trying to appeal, so you can’t access the source code right now, but the downloads on their site (which links directly from GitHub) still work.
