Privacy@lemmy.ml•Any privacy-respecting apps to use for my phone to make NFC?
7·1 year agoAre you referring to “tap to pay” with your phone that uses NFC?
If so, you are out of luck. Only options (at least in the USA) are Apple, Google, and Samsung.

69·1 year agoKey point: "Flock users can request that Ring doorbell users share footage to help with “evidence collection and investigative work.”
This is not any kind of live link. It is just another way to request a specific video recording be shared by the user. The user has full control. Ring already has the same system in place on their “neighborhood” platform.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Bluetooth trackers usable without Google
3·1 year agoI use Samsung SmartTag2 devices. There is an open source application called uTag that also uses a privacy friendly customized version of Samsung’s SmartThings app. This also allows the user to use the trackers on non-Samsung devices.
Do these work with Home Assistant? I’m not an Apple user. Anyone know if video can be stored locally instead of Apple servers?

Exactly! If you don’t hold the encryption key (private), then it’s not really secure.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Encrypted services Apple, Proton and Wire helped Spanish police identify activist | TechCrunch
1·2 years agoAs someone who has worked fraud and online investigations, and both written and served search warrants; it is not an option. A probable cause affidavit is presented to a judge and if the judge agrees there is sufficient probable cause, a search warrant is issued. This is an order by the judge and not optional. The judge can hold the company in contempt if they refuse to obey his/her order.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Encrypted services Apple, Proton and Wire helped Spanish police identify activist | TechCrunch
1·2 years ago“helped” is very misleading. Companies can’t refuse to provide information they have when served a search warrant / court order. These companies DID NOT choose to provide the info on their own.
