It is ridiculous. I am interviewing for embedded systems development where we frequently write to specific bits in a register. I am sure these kids have had to learn something, but I can’t figure out a polite way to ask them to give me some examples of what.

I wish it was a joke. Maybe they were deliberately getting the answer wrong to waste our time, but the body language was not consistent with someone fucking with me.

My company probably doesn’t get the best candidates (defense contractor that pays somewhat less than market rate), but yeah.

Two nibbles is an acceptable answer.

We have been interviewing for entry level positions and the new grads know less than ever before. I don’t really care what they know, I am looking for evidence that they can think, but I usually ease them into thinking scenarios by asking easy foundational questions like how many bits in a byte. You would think I was asking for them to explain the Shrodinger wave equations… One candidate was waivering between 13 and 17…

My Gen Alpha kid refuses to learn when I offer to teach him. I am not going to force him to become technologically literate. (I’m Gen X and write software professionally). Maybe it’s my fault because my teaching style is incompatible with his learning style? He won’t accept my offers to send him to classes either.

I can’t wait to verify my age to all 14 operating systems in my car. My Traeger grill has an OS. So does my router. Does a bare metal super loop count as an OS? It did in my undergrad operating systems class. Do I need to verify the pilot’s age for all of the operating systems in an F35? Who supplies the ID for the OS in an ATM?

I had to use regedit to get rid of it. I still have a win11 boot disk, but I mostly run kubuntu now. Forty years of Microsoft being my primary operating system has come to a close. One drive and Copilot drove me away.

H.264 came out in 2003. Shouldn’t the patents associated with it have expired by now? 23 years is more than 20 years from the filing date or else the codec’s release itself is prior art. The 17 years from issuance rule ended in 1995. I don’t think they can have any Lemelson style submarine patents that are still valid.

This looks like it is technology that I should borrow for use in Texas. Love it.

Yeah, the protocol itself is pretty robust. The cable I had didn’t have enough noise immunity for the dirty power the building had in India (afternoon brown outs when the voltage dipped when the air conditioners ran). The Faraday cage that I made around the cable helped with the noise and also (and I believe more crucially though I had no scope to confirm) gave the two boards a common ground. I had a little trouble with before I left, but it didn’t work at all in India until I modded it. Made the hardware engineer buy me a beer when I got back.

This was a proprietary cable specific to our board design. Believe me, I wish we could have used a standard cable.
