PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Nintendo’s Monster Capturing Patent Got Rejected by Japan’s Patent Office Due to Lack of OriginalityEnglish
121·10 days agoYup, lemmy users frequently seem to have this strange idea that lemmy is somehow representative of the Nintendo customer base. I agree that I find Nintendo’s business practices terrible and their last Pokemon mainline title was frankly boring and uninteresting. But the reality is also that Scarlet/Violet was the second-best selling Pokemon game ever.

5·20 days agoThe AI stuff might genuinely factor into it, I largely don’t use it myself but from what I understand from some colleagues it’s churning out decent react and co, while other languages can have mixed results.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I just found out my fiancee wants to switch to linux, lets start a distro war, what should be her first? + other questions
2·27 days agoNot a mint user myself, but I have helped a friend install it. The install script at the time would silently crash if it had issues with the network card name. Researching it I found that this had been reported 8 months before my friend ran into it, and a PR submitted, but was not even looked at for a month after. Sure, these are all (largely) unpaid volunteers, but if your objective is to be beginner friendly, stuff like that really shouldn’t be left sitting for so long.

2·28 days agoWonder if they copied that from their pitch deck or something, I don’t think I have ever seen that touted as a feature in any other context.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Ensh*ttification of Everything with Cory Doctorow [1:49:08]English
5·1 month agoI presume it’s a mix of things, there are near daily changes making services worse for consumers in one way or another, which fuels the relevancy of Doctorows writing on the one hand and the desire of people to be agreed with on the other.

- Just use -Syu, not -Syyu, the latter is for when you swap mirrors or your local index is broken.

7·1 month agoYup, the baseband modem does what it’s firmware tells it to, and that’s entirely independent from the phone’s software. And open baseband modems to my knowledge don’t exist.

51·2 months agoYup, the fediverse has a lot of things still to solve and figure out before it goes anywhere. I have little faith that present moderation would scale well if there was a massive growth in the userbase. And then there’s the other issue. There’s a discussion on the peertube github for two years now on how to keep instances from dying.
Might be, that one I can’t test, I don’t have any samsung devices.
Discord supports webp. I use it regularly.
What - doesn’t - support webp at this point? P much all maintained open source software has for years upon years, os x has for years, Android and iOS have for ages as well, even windows added support a year ago or so supposedly.
Like are these memes made by confused time travelers?
Os X has supported webp for years.
I mean the data from those has been used for AI training for ages so it’s hardly surprising it got good at it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mastodon says it doesn't 'have the means' to comply with age verification lawsEnglish
13·2 months agoI am sorry but much as I enjoy lemmy, activitypub is absolutely not a threat to anything. Mastodon and co had stagnant to declining user numbers ever since the last twitter exodus. And as things are, that just isn’t going to change and no amount of telling each other so in the mastodon and lemmy echo-chambers is going to change that.
Worse, the open platforms could absolutely not handle massive growth. Moderation would be a nightmare. How many people are going to volunteer to look over the additional thousands of thousands of posts with gore, csam etc. And you would need a lot of them.
Who’s going to pay for the legal advice that inevitably will be needed for the various situations that’d crop up if the network ever got enough users to be an actual threat? Donations? How well is that going to scale? How many volunteer hosters and admins would still be willing to do it in the face of all that?
ActivityPub is a niche, and if you enjoy it, you should hope it stays that way, because it certainly wouldn’t survive mainstream.

Oh please no, Johnny was one of the worst parts of the game.
