Exactly, becoming a carpenter still retains one major issue with the programming profession. Several programmers I know even have to deal directly with the company’s customers (though they tend to complain more about their own management).

Just switch to hyphens - they’re easier to type and they’re always directly available, without relying on conversion of double-hyphen or obscure key combinations that might not be available on different operating systems.

Significant whitespace is the best! I don’t understand why so many people have issues with it.

I’ve been using it pretty consistently for years, I achieve uptimes upwards of 60 days like this. The downside is that it takes kinda long to enter that state and there’s a chance that it fails to enter it (though it doesn’t crash, just goes to the screenlock), especially on my laptop - it refuses to go into hibernation unless I kill most webbrowser windows, especially stuff like YouTube.

And you do need a pretty large swap space; with those super long uptimes, even swap size = ram size isn’t always enough, because sometimes the swap space is actually used as swap and not just as hibernation image storage.

Really, hibernate as well? On my linux desktop and laptops, hibernate completely cuts the power. It’s definitely possible that this works differently for a handheld device, though, and I don’t think I even tried using hibernate on an ARM device.

It could, theoretically but probably not, be a multilayered joke about thinking you installed Python but actually installing something else, like any of the other snake-themed programming thingies or straight-up malware.

I think Matrix offers most of the functions you need, “Discord but selfhostable and with E2EE” is pretty much what the Matrix devs are going for. Though it kinda has issues with ease-of-use, performance and stability, so TBH I doubt it’s going to work for you.

Yeah, this all sounds super fucked up. I suppose we shouldn’t have expected the KDE project to be sceptical of a new technology, they always went right in and published before it was quite ready and they were never the type to choose maintainability over additional features.

It’s not unrelated, industrialization has a clear tendency to concentrate the means of production in the hands of the rich; a weaver/taylor can own a 16th century weaving apparatus, they can’t own a 19th century weaving plant unless we get into cooperatives, which are pretty hard to organize compared to buying a loom for yourself.

I think what people don’t get about the Luddites is that they were aware that the technology itself wasn’t the main issue, but who owns the technology and what working conditions they offer.

IMO you can see the same thing with AI, OpenAI, Microsoft etc. clearly don’t have our best interests in mind and everyone wants to do layoffs while social security is being dismantled, nevermind having a serious discussion about universal basic income or the massive resource use in the middle of a climate catastrophe.

Have you seen (well, read about) 19th century working class living conditions in Britain? The main issue was always working conditions, and they were 100% right about that. And it’s not an either/or, you can absolutely do industrialization without 16 hour shifts at poverty wages but that’s clearly not what the plant owners were going to do. The offer was shit, and they turned it the fuck down.
