Not entirely wrong, but tokens are not just “fake” in the way, for example, an in-game currency is. They’re the fundamental “units” of data, both input and output, processed by the model. For most models, tokens are just a certain number of characters or words. So they’re not completely untethered from the model. If we’re both using Clankerbot v5.1: Sloppy Logic Edition™️, your tokens are defined in the same way mine are.

This is near the edge of my limited understanding, but AFAIK, yeah they can mess with token costs and billing schemes all they want. They could theoretically charge us 2 different costs per token, or do surge pricing or some shit.

Redlib is a self-hosted software - there are many different public instances.

There are many instances of Redlib which can be used to sidestep reddit dot com. I’d recommend finding a few good ones if you find yourself getting info from reddit very often. Or better yet, host your own.

What I would like to know, though, is what is the best way to automatically use a Redlib instance whenever I click a reddit dot com link on my device. I have an app from f-droid called “sidestep” which works ok but not great. I’m looking for something which ideally works on both android and Linux.

I usually take this route and it’s easier to find barebones machines with no ram/ssd installed or just a lower quantity of RAM than I wanted. I purchase RAM separately to install. If the machine comes with RAM that gets taken out for upgrade I sell it back into the market if it’s worth it, or sometimes it goes down the line to one of my other machines. You can get some pretty dope deals this way with what I think is minimal extra effort.

It manages to break so many conventions, and not in a good way. “Installing” an app might mean something close to a traditional install (but only it knows where things are installed to).
