Similar to skimming ARM machine code in hexadecimal - patterns stand out and you can see the overall structure, though not necessarily single bytes. Enough to recognize the nature of the data if it’s one that was heard before.

I can listen to a 300 baud bitstream and get an idea of what the data is.
