TrackerControl uses an on-device mock VPN to listen for DNS requests to known advertisers/trackers.
If you’re using a browser and navigate to a website with any tracking URLs, when they get queried TC will hear those and flag. If you have the F-Droid version you can have it block those extra requests, but better is having a properly configured ad blocker on your browser.
The problem isn’t the apps, it’s the sites you’re visiting.
