Is that what the point of the meme was? You can read it as being about how much lower the stakes are, too.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Haskellers when someone boasts about Typescript's fake type system.English
12·18 days agoI don’t even think it’s fashion. Some ideas sound good but are bad. Or, overlappingly, are convenient to use but actually turn into nightmarish spaghetti code. I don’t know how many people are still pushing MongoDB and BASE, for example.
Meanwhile SQL hasn’t changed, and C didn’t until someone figured out memory safety in Rust.

Technology@beehaw.org•Is ubiquitous A.I. writing "inevitable"?English
2·20 days agoSure, if we’re talking about writing for it’s own sake. Most of what people use AI for is, like, emails and advertising copy. Maybe porn. Book reviews and newsletters, per this article. It’s all writing that’s secondary to some other purpose.

3·22 days ago5 years is also a pretty arbitrary span to go with. You could smoothly discount future time savings instead, but then your discounting curve is arbitrary.
The most rigorous way to go would be to set some kind of future goal, and then work your way backwards to find some kind of statistical description of the shortest path there, or else set some kind of future metric at a specific time and find the path that maximises it. This is pretty much how you design your investing portfolio, just with money instead of labour.

7·28 days agoOuting yourself as a Windows abstainer isn’t the worst thing, I guess.
There seems to be a real tendency to want to narrow the band of what a functioning adult is, centered right around whatever age the poster happens to be at.
Not zero-indexing people’s attractiveness SMH. /s
So then in binary this would mean a decimal 5?

1·4 months agoThat’s not really what I meant.
To do this properly, OP would have to start with the relevant timestamp and a brief transcript. The context would then be, like, why this is being mentioned in that video and at that place in the video, even if it’s as simple as “this is a prominent Linux YouTuber talking about the drama a bit in passing”. Just so that it’s not quote mining from irrelevant people and places.
(It’s worth noting that a guy I’ve never heard of being fashy isn’t really a crazy claim, anyway. I’m not going to make final judgements based on it, but then I wouldn’t ask for a source, either)

144·4 months agoTBH I feel the same way when someone sends me a source that would take a good fraction of my day to check.
Why don’t you put in a little bit of your own time to extract the relevant parts, and explain the surrounding context?

2·8 months agoThis was before that - Avodah Zarah is the one I actually read through.
Like, you can’t leave a barrel of mashed grapes too long, because it’s then assumed a pagan broke in, danced on it and left, turning it into pagan wine which is the same as doing idolatry yourself, somehow. And it goes on.
There’s other examples as well, of course. Puritans got worked up about Catholic-seeming practices within the Church of England, although I don’t remember which ones, off the top of my head.

2·8 months agoThat seems likely, zealots love a good dividing line. I’m reminded of all the weird obsessing in the Mishnah about wine because the non-Jews of the period used it in sacrifices.

0·2 years agoYeah, but I don’t want to have an app on my phone for a store I go to once. I don’t give a fuck if the page is ugly.
And letting the US government spy on you helps with that?
In reality, people are built for the stone age and a little out of their depth with 21st century technology. Unless there’s some visual indicator of the spying their normal social instincts don’t kick in.
