The average person distro hopped at least 3 times before they settled on Mint.

Hey, he’s famous, show some respect! Everything he says is sacred and has to be cherished. If we stop listening to celebrities how would majority of people form opinions about anything? You expect them to read a book or something?

Are the clients usable or is the user experience more like KeePass (i.e. bad)?

Yes, there are dozens of them. Dozens!

They are all looking for billions in new rounds of funding now. If they can get it the shitshow will continue. Looking at the stock price of SpaceX (an artificially inflated fantasy “AI in space” company owned by a Nazi) they will get it.

Did or did not?

I will help you out here… When people say “I think X will happen” it’s not the same as saying “I want X to happen” or “I think X should happen”. I know the difference can be hard to grasp sometimes.
To make it clear… I don’t think AI should be treated like it’s conscious but I think people are stupid enough to do it. This announcement from Anthropic shows that general perception is slowly moving in that direction. What seemed crazy two years ago is now being circulated like a valid idea. Get it now?

Yes, and? If you think people don’t do stupid things every single day go outside and look around.

And?

I said from the beginning that we will get “real” AI when people start treating it as conscious, not when someone will prove that it is. Technical arguments have no place here. We can all know that the AI girlfriend is just a really good text prediction model but if society accepts it as real person it will be treated as such and granted rights. Similar thing happened to animals.

Here’s what the field should do: ignore those paper and never publish them. Then have people verify the math and publish the proofs as their own (whoever can do it first gets the credit).

The other is the widely held suspicion that much of the “breakthrough” mathematics here has been stolen from real researchers who’ve been using chatgpt to develop their theories by talking to it
I think that was just some rumor. In the end the accusation was that they basically brute-forced a solution using methods developed by someone else and claimed they solved it but those methods were public, not stolen because they used ChatGPT.

It sounds more like when AI won in Go for the first time. People were looking at the game and saying “humans don’t play like that, we don’t understand those moves”.

I try to avoid as much as possible (I will literally spend hours looking for alternative stores instead of buying with one click on Amazon) but sometimes there’s literally no other place to get something from. I order something once every couple of years.

I don’t think this is an AI issue. It made things slightly worse (and probably a lot worse for junior devs) but work in IT/development always sucked and led to burnout. If you read about prehistory of the industry (The Soul of a New Machine for example) few people worked as engineers for more than a decade. They would work extremely hard on couple of projects, burn out and move on to managerial positions, become architects or something. Then more and more people started to aim for Principal type jobs thinking that they will do programming forever. Well, the fact is that programming as a job mostly sucks. It’s possible to find great team and interesting project but it never lasts. You usually can’t make any decisions and are just doing what you’re told, even if you know it’s stupid. There’s always some boring maintenance work that no one likes. There’s support which robs you of your free time…
In my experience, fun projects last a year or two and then management changes, team members change, projects end and suddenly you find yourself in a completely different environment. It’s tiring and yes, people do burn out all the time. And yes, we keep doing it because coding is a fairly good work and we like it. With or without AI.

Yes, I don’t know anyone who’s older or younger then me. It’s all a lie.
But chatbots didn’t go through any trials, they were just shipped and people started using them. And this excerpt doesn’t say when their adverse effect become noticeable so it could be just couple of weeks.
