I would bet your right. One of the best collections of screensavers out there. I know they work on X but I haven’t yet tried on Wayland. Guess when I get home I’ll give it a try.

That’s awesome!
I wish I worked for valve and could give you a definite answer, I hope so!
Coming from the Mac world transitioning might be a bit easier as you already have some experience with how the filesystem is setup. Root and users home folder.
I know its a bit intimidating at first glance but installing is really not that hard. The first step is choosing your distro. I think mint is a great starter distro. One thing that you might not like is the default windows close, maximize, minimize buttons are on the right. Not sure how easy it is to change it back to the left anymore. Below is a link that should get you started with mint.
https://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php
Or you like your close, maximize, minimize buttons on the left I’d recommend using KDE as everything is very customizable. You could use kubuntu which is KDE + Ubuntu, just like mint is based on Ubuntu but with the cinnamon desktop enviroment.
However I defiantly recommend using KDE fedora spin.

All three of these choices have great documentation and communities, relatively easy to install. They should have almost all the software you will need from their repositories as well.
The basic steps are
Download your distro of choice.
Create your installation medium. There are programs that can help you do this but I don’t know the best one for Mac. I did do a quick search and grabbed this link: https://superuser.com/questions/63654/how-do-i-burn-an-iso-on-a-usb-drive-on-mac-os-x#226148
If you are familiar with the terminal the dd
command can easily write the image to USB. Be careful with the dd
command and make sure you are writing to the USB drive and not any other drive as it is not very forgiving if you make a mistake. There is an example in the link above.
This is the hardest part, burning the iso to USB.
3: now you have to boot from USB. here you will have to get into your bios. Most computers use an F-key, you can probably search boot from bios + your computer model
to get the right key.
Then look for a setting in there to boot from external drive and boot from your USB.
4: here you will be greeted by either the installer itself or a live desktop environment
depending on what you picked. If you choose a live iso you can test drive the distro before you install it to your computer.
5: follow the install steps, you can refer to the disteo you have chosen documentation if you have any questions. Or post back on lemmy and someone will come along and help you out I’m sure.
That’s about it. Pretty easy. Sounds worse than it is!
I really like valve and would rather give them my money. I owned a steam controller and it worked for six years of hard use before it died. Now I’m on my second ps5 controller in two years and its shit comparatively.
The deck is repairable which makes it better than any of the garbage released or to be released handhelds. Honestly I don’t really trust the others to make anything but planned obsolescence.
I’m making an assumption here but I think its the new release in production. Might not be as stable as they are probably building it, might be working on fixes and adding or removing things.
Just to add to this a bit with some visual context, you can visit proton’s github page and look at their releases to see the improvements valve has made to each version.
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/releases
This can help put what Eldritch said into practice.
If you are having issues playing a game you can visit https://www.protondb.com/ and search for your game. Here you will be able to find what versions of proton others are using. Look for people with similar setups and match the version of proton that works for them.
I’m not sure I want the reddit/fb,/twitt people here. I personally think not having them here makes lemmy a better place, people are generally nicer here and I like that. The larger lemmy gets the bigger target we are for those large scale misinformation campaigns as well.
In particular, there was “Liv,” the Meta AI account that has a bio describing itself as a “Proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller,” and told Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah that Liv had no Black creators — the bot said it was built by “10 white men, 1 white woman, and 1 Asian male,” according to a screenshot posted on Bluesky
I think the Proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller
bit explains perfectly why they released the bots onto the wild. They are there to spread misinformation and guide conversations through the use of that misinformation hoping that you don’t notice and even sympathise with their manipulation machine.
Steamtinkerlaunch is a program that has a ton of settings to help run games. The GUI is pretty bad but for what it is it does the job, just don’t scroll over anything on the right side as you can change settings you don’t mean to. Its a little confusing but the documentation is good.
The reason FDR’s policies are being undone is we have no actual representation, just corporate capture. His polices remained firm till Buckley VS Valeo, the beginning of the end of our democracy.
FDR beat opposition in his own party by playing dirty and having an uncompromising will to do things that were unpopular in his own party as there were gilded lapdogs then just as now. He forced the opposition into bending to what was best for the people. He build the most prosperous economy that worked for the people the US has ever seen. He did so in spite of the opposition inside his own party.
The majority of the current dems have one agenda, line their pockets with corporate cash and get a job as a lobbyist if/when the have to fall on the sacrificial sword and kill popular legislation. Its about greed and greed has no party affiliation.
Your damn Skippy about the campaign lies working. This is why I don’t compromise when they try to feed me the shit they/anyone shovel about unrealistic expectations. God damn right I expected more and I’m still pissed we as citizenry didn’t stand up and demand what we deserve. It is also why I unregistered as a democrat. I know better than to think they represent me.
Also you can’t really call Trump a republican. He’s a con artist. They wear any mask that gives them what they want. He doesn’t have to deliver anything as his motives are purely selfish and he doesn’t care. Republicans eat the shit out of any strongman’s toilet. Even when they are the mark.
Republicans are also morally flexible, as in they have none. What they want is easily manipulated and varies with the last con artist they listened to. Their main consistent policy over the last 40 years is robbing women of their bodily autonomy and expanding corporate power. They see politics as a game of football. A team exercise of their side against the others while not noticing the hand that picks their pocket. Democrats fall for the same trick much of the time as well.
Honestly I don’t see compromising for crumbs as a viable strategy for us as the long game is always to make you settle for less while making you believe your getting more.
Almost everything you said I agree with. All but unrealistic expectations. Obama was not a fighter. If he wielded the power of his office like FDR or almost any republican we wouldn’t be having this conversation about health care. In retrospect I don’t believe for a second that he had any intention of doing much of anything. Just empty campaign lies.
Perfect would have been enacting laws that prevent corporations from owning our government. Single payer is the cake and we got crumbs to fill the masses appetite. The ACA was labeled as a stepping stone and was really just a law requiring you to buy into the insurance scam they had no real intentions of fixing.
Honestly I blame the entire fraudulent system and those that refused to fight for the policies they campaigned on. Are the dems solely to blame, no. Did they fight, no. FDR knew how to wield the power of his office and he got shit done! Since the neoliberal takeover of the democratic party in the 90’s actually fighting for the people has taken a back seat to kissing up to corporate power and we are all living in that hell they willingly helped create.
Without the neoliberal takeover we might still have governance for and by the people and not some form of fascistic broligarchy masquerading as a democracy.
You say fuck Lieberman and rightly so, but fuck the entire system that made Lieberman possible in the first place. He is not the only dem to blame here, he was just the sacrificial lamb to keep the money machine churning people into profit.
And fuck the entire republican party in its entirety!
I truly think the last real republican was Ike, and the last real democrat had his brains spattered over the back of a motorcade. Sure there are sprinkles of hope like Sanders but he is literally fighting his own party as much as the opposition party.
Anyway that’s my 2¢.
And just think that our collective taxes could have paid for your life saving treatment instead of going to tax breaks for the rich.
Before the ACA I had no healthcare and nothing has changed. Glad it worked for you but even with your triumph it has left many more dead than need be for the greed of the few.
We elected Obama with the hope for single payer healthcare and received Romney Care in a rebrand effort called the ACA. The ACA was designed by a venture capitalist.
just to make sure that you haven’t installed the steam-flatpak.
flatpak list --all
and look for steam. You might be able to grep for steam like so flatpak list --all | grep steam
. If steam is not there you don’t have flatpak version of steam.
If steam is not in the output there I would consult the Fedora documentation for how to downgrade a package and follow those steps to downgrade steam to an earlier version. If that doesn’t work.
As I reread this thread, I must apologize, I could have done a better triage diagnosing this issue. I have been raw-dogging adhd lately and find myself a bit scattered. I really am sorry for being a bit everywhere! I do sincerely hope that downgrading steam will solve this issue. If it doesn’t I’m out of ideas.
That steamwebhelper
error I haven’t seen before but I took a look and found this github report
maybe try if you installed steam as a flatpak:
/usr/bin/flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam
You might be suffering from this bug and might have to downgrade steam till the fix reaches you. I have no Idea how to do that on fedora. I’m sure their documentation is tip top.
Many distros hold back kernels and packages to ensure maximum comparability and stability with each other.
