It honestly baffles me how this keeps being a thing. Not just for OSs but for a lot of websites too. And the wild thing is that most of the time, it’s not even that important and the user does not and should not care about it.

You’re not alone, I’ve been screaming into the void about this for a long time too. People keep saying “Linux is user friendly enough these days for even non techy people” and I’m sorry but it’s totally not.

I think most Linux users just don’t realize how technologically illiterate most people are. Most people can barely use a browser and send emails. They absolutely don’t want to mess with anything related to “updates” that they have no idea wtf is doing to their system anyway.

My edit obviously. It does feel like that though. I pay Netflix, not the people making the movie. For games it is at least a bit better - I pay Valve (Steam) and the publisher but at least some of it goes directly to the devs. But it could be better still I suppose. But I’d honestly be okay if we got a Steam-like platform for series and movies where I could buy the ones I want without any subscriptions.

Uh, how? I mean you’d need to make it legal I feel like. But that’s never going to happen and I honestly don’t think that’s fair either. If piracy is legal, how would content creators actually be paid?

I get the sentiment but this is not really an option most of the time if you want to stick with lawful methods. For instance, I cannot watch most movies or TV series these days without a subscription to some service.

While there certainly is some blame on the programmers (to the extent that it is useful to even assign blame), I would say it is hardly fair to blame programmers for most mistakes.

Bugs are a fact of life - the presence of bugs can hardly be blamed on a specific programmer. Rather, it is a result of the resources assigned to a project and its quality assurance. Yes, at the end of the day it comes down to the lines of code written, but everything and anyone involved in the process up to that point (like designers, project managers, people managers and of course executives at the top) are to blame as well. Especially the decision-makers who deprioritized security or quality assurance are to blame, much more so than the programmer who wrote the line.

The difference is that when that happens on Reddit, you can’t go anywhere else. On Lemmy, you can go to any other instance and do it better if you feel the mods elsewhere are bad.
