I wanted my computer to be secure but headless. Suse, fedora both had supposed instructions but in classic Linux style they had a bunch of out of date commands and software and it didn’t work. Fedora always required a human to enter a password on boot, suse just bricked.

Endeavarch had instructions (a maze of unclear gibberish, to be honest) that actually worked and did what I wanted with minimal fuss and it’s been operating well for 2 years.

Sure, it counts. Which is Firefox’s point. If you make a definition super broad, and some people will always try to extend the meaning of words until they explode like a Samsung battery, then you need to protect yourself by removing language that might be in contrast to that extremely broad definition. Tuta is very suspect

I think it’s safe to say you went too fast (id always start with email forwarding and slowly moving services over in ascending order of importance, and make sure you avoid email 2fa if at all possible), but that does suck.

Tuta is definitely the least reputable of the privacy email services, I still don’t know why they get recommended. I’ve made and lost several accounts with them and treat them like a burner.

Protons a bit risky to me because they’re very aggressive about immediately locking you out if you don’t pay right away (in this case a trial expired, they charged me with no credit card on the account and threatened to block me from accessing my account if I didn’t pay up even though I immediately contacted them and tried to cancel as soon as I saw the trial expired). To me that level of inflexibility is, while maybe acceptable in Europe, not for me. I keep a few email addresses and as soon as the above happened immediately moved everything out of proton.

But really what I’d recommend is the more traditional services that you pay a small amount for. Posteo has been good for me for several years. I’ve read similar things about similar services which aren’t marketed as “privacy” services but instead they just aren’t Google.

I think those are for sales, like b2c advertising. Not for how your business talks to each other internally to destroy databases.

Keeping it in your bedroom has advantages, especially if you’re prone to forgetting because you see it right in front of you before you go to bed. It also dries faster (less bacteria growth) and you never have to clear it out to clean your bathroom sink (obviously a non-issue if you have a cabinet).

If you’re talking about a commercial building or something, sure. I get the concept I suppose it just seems like it’s probably optimizing 2025 hardware against 2005 constraints when we’re talking about a single household. I’m unlikely to automate any part of my home in the near future but if I ever did I’d definitely want to look for some data (like, “gaming latency increases 20% with 10 smart devices”).

We’re talking about things that take ms to decide and act upon. I mean if you prefer it or you’re used to it that’s fine but for many people I’d argue the cost of change in either direction is higher than the aggregate savings in time.
