Selfhosted@lemmy.world•looking for lightweight ghost blog alternativeEnglish
1·8 days agoBear blog was open source under the MIT license, and then they changed to a copyleft license in 2025. What I didnt realize is they dont have any selfhosting tooling or documentation which is a shame
Looks like im gonna have to go with mataroa like I originally planned and write some custom css to inject

3·8 days agoHave you taken a look at bear blog, it uses markdown or html and aimed to be small and maintainable well into the figure
Never got Genshin working on any distro, even the “anime game launcher” launcher
I drove Alpine a while back and the docs are amazing for getting every little thing setup. LabWC, Wayfire, and River (now river-classic) all ran perfectly with a fully custom EWW bar/launcher/notifications ontop of them. I only ever played the OG S.T.A.L.K.E.R games and Anomaly on that setup but they ran without hiccup
Its still installed on my laptop but I haven’t really touched it in quite some time, and my desktop is on Bazzite since its mainly a gaming machine. I dont recommend Alpine as a desktop distro because of the amount of setup/configuration needed, but I find it much nicer to use as a dev system than Arch

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Renting Servers: Criticisms and Recommendations?English
0·16 days agoIf ypu have the hardware but not the forwarding capability like me, you can use cloudflare tunnels for free, or setup headscale on a free orical vps. Otherwise go with the cheapest vps you can find (Im using Hetzner, but ive heard good things about netcup, or even Oricals free teir vps and move off of it if you end up not ditching selfhosting), play around, and if you need more power its as trivial as backing up your services and putting them on a more powerful server

Linux@lemmy.ml•People always making fun of Linux update for making their sound or networks drivers stopped working. While Windows update outright corrupt your biosEnglish
112·17 days agoTo everyone asking who linux breaks for: me. My desktop? Wont wake from sleep half the time (motherboard issue, fuck you ASRock), I have a laptop that wont load its wifi drivers unless you sacrifice 12 children too it(it legit just had wonky drivers being an older intel wifi chip), audio and video issues out the ass on those old dell office pcs
Just because you won the hardware lottery doesnt mean wonky devices dont still exist. And sometimes people shop by price of hardware not its linux compatibility

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Android 17 QPR1 is the first release since Android Honeycomb (3.x) adding new APIs for app developers without a release to the Android Open Source Project.English
4·23 days agoHow would that help exactly? /gen
As I understand it linux phones are most commonly android, but with a linux container layered ontop. Mainly because phone firmware is so incredibly hard to not only reverse engineer but even extract as a blob to work with any modifications. So your stuck maintaining separate ROMs just for the firmware, with minimal work involved to port ASOP itself

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•We need a list of products we can buy without worrying about telemetry or advertising.English
103·24 days agoCars: Anything released without wifi/calling. I dont think any modern electric predates this, but you can convert diesels to friendlier oils or most engines to a run off wood. As a bonus higher trim older cars used a lot less plastic
Smartwatch: Pinetime
3D printers: id like to add Sovol, not sure about their more recent ones but their older ones either didnt have wifi or run regular klipper. The SV06/SV06 ACE are also entirelly open source except for the GUI, but you can install other klipper GUIs (theres also a repo with steps to build a minimal Debian install instead of relying on sovols firmware updates)
Routers: GL.iNET Use a modified OpenWRT install out of the box but can be flashed to vanilla OpenWRT through the GUI

131·28 days agoI dont think its ironfox’s fault but it seems to be triggering somekinda flag on almost every “normal” internet site that causes the site to just not connect or be incredibly slow. Works just fine on some personal blog sites and loads my own selfhosted stuff just fine
Thanks for sharing that project I had no idea it existed and it looks super cool! Although it isn’t a maintained distro/real alternative as said by the creator themselves in the talk

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Audacity 4.0 is finally out!English
111·1 month agoKinda sad to see they did end up changing the logo, it really looks awful…
That aside I am extremely excited for the new features. The telemetry controversy was overblown(it was still bad dont get me wrong) but I do fear for the future of this being corporate owned
One big diffrence between NixOS and Guix not mentioned is NixOS(the operating system only, the package manager is agnostic) is directly tied to systemD. Nothing against systemD but if your also interested in crafting/learning everything about your system your have more freedom with Guix and the NonGuix repo (nonguix is like an unofficial AUR for guix)

Linux@lemmy.ml•Wayland Found To Be "Intrinsically Faster Than X11, But Not Necessarily More Efficient"English
5·2 months agoKDE plasma wayland user since 5.20 specifically because the x11 version would bug out on me having a 240hz monitor alongside my 60hz drawing tablet. Plasma 6.7 has fixed basically every bug with refresh rate/animations I’ve had at this point including that frame rate one(which I think was caused by the animation reading from disk instead of ram?)

Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the worst distro-specific problems you have faced?English
3·2 months agoiirc Debians reasoning is that on a desktop you dont really have any ports exposed anyway, so theres nothing to firewall. And on a base install your expected to follow the documentation that includes a guide to setting up a firewall
As someone else mentioned the framework pro is a good pick and also the cool new kid on the block with the repair and upgradablity(however you spell that). However spec and build quality wise, any high end business laptop will have full linux support since their be used for IT/software dev and robust enough construction to not break in a few years
That Dell looks good, ive heard good things about the new Lenovo too, really just go with whichever option is cheaper
OP this is a great laptop if this commenter is selling at a reasonable price since Dell has official linux support on this laptop since dev work is one of its main purposes

Open Source@lemmy.ml•any icon packs/launchers that are not flat design?English
1·2 months agoDepends on your ROM, if your running stock android/ASOP/LineageOS I believe theres programs that can change the look of parts of the OS without root, but I don’t have experience with them. I had a locked Samsung and their UI is probably the most customizable without rooting your device since you can change practically everything with goodlock
Thanks a lot for the advice!
In practice fish is extremely more efficient then bash with the script profiling at 9ms. Not amazing but since this will only run once when opening the shell its small enough to not be noticeable
So thats where it was! My original script tried to loop over all the cpu max and mins and calculate the percentage before deciding uptime was just more practical. Thanks for the info!
Its just so damn easy to grab the piece of info you want with lol
Really thanks for all the feedback Ill have to work some of your advice in when I get back to my computer
