if you’re not actually promoting gmail, you ought to make that explicitly clear.
by pointing out something bad about proton and praising gmail’s version of that, it looks like you’re doing nothing other than recommending gmail in a privacy community.
everyone already knows gmail has high usability and convenience and zero (financial) cost. using it as an example in this community is redundant and ineffective. better to use another e2ee email service as an example.
in all seriousness, palantir and clearview are way more dangerous than most of the other shit going on out there. only Putin has greater max evil potential (when considering not only politics and military but also Russian Mafia and western politician campaign secret donations).
theyre basically Albion from watch dogs legion.
I’ve heard of “pirate radio” since decades ago but never understood what is pirated about it.
are they broadcasting pirated music? broadcasting from ships committing maritime piracy? drinking Captain Morgan?
thanks for bringing this to the anglophone community
no offense intended but
lately, the articles about lack of privacy being the downfall of murderers and dictators… it’s killing my enthusiasm for privacy
i won’t give up on privacy… its just starting to feel gross… learning lessons from ppl who ought to suffer.
edit: everyone replying to me seems to misunderstand catastrophically. “losing enthusiasm” does NOT mean quitting privacy. i will never quit privacy. i have ANXIETY ABOUT LOSING PRIVACY. DON’T reply to me to convince me about privacy. i am a privacy evangelist.
my original comment was intended to say: “hey privacy advocates! stop posting articles about murderers and genocidal autocrats!”
dirt on water? mud?
watch out posting content from valnet sites…
i got flamed for not criticizing valnet
unfortunately, Japan companies notoriously don’t give a shit about earning money by making their fans (especially international fans) happy.
generally Japan companies’ main motivation for fandom is to create niche one-off experiences in inconvenient locations at inconvenient times in a way that only Japan residents with lots of free time and disposable income can participate. because that makes those participants feel special and elite in an exclusive secret “ultra rich aristocratic” feeling club.
Japan society rarely gives residents the feeling of being special and valued in social groups or even family, so they feel strongly enough to spend and charge exorbitantly for the experience.
don’t be like one of the now!now!now! types (i.e. OP) and treat every new discovery (personal first encounters with existing tech, situations) as the final nail in the coffin. there are other messengers available while waiting for signal to change.
just saying, acknowledge that many others have arrived at the same problem years before you and they are not your enemy. so yelling at the choir is counter productive.
thousands of threads on this topic since decades ago.
it’s an eternal debate (since signal has no plans to change)
just read the history and join the rest of us waiting for them to change. using signal before that change is completely optional. go ahead and don’t use it. no problem.
opening the discussion again is just tiring.

kana flick was non-negotiable for me so, while im not proud of it, for now I’m using ms swiftkey in incognito, no Google play, network permission revoked (capability of Graphene OS).
another reason i chose it is handwriting input for Chinese.
anyway this is just until fcitx implements kana flick, per below issues.
other kana flick options:

not sure exactly what features you need but there are
if command line is OK, ffmpeg is the most versatile and customizable and tons of support docs and question forums (superuser, stackoverflow, askubuntu) for every conceivable niche one-off operation
they’re not gonna listen to it…
does proton want to be constantly harassed (aka investigated informally without charges nor warrants) by fbi, police, mi5, mi6, Interpol, Europol, etc etc via kyc laws and money laundering laws because a few hundreds/thousands petitioners said “do this”? they would receive even more requests for user data (which often don’t require warrants in many countries btw) than they already receive.
or would they rather continue to enable millions of users to escape censorship while still making lots of money and only sometimes harassed by LE?
in other words do you think proton is a conscience with software attached? or are they a money-making company that has slightly better values than certain other companies?
(rhetorical questions. i know the answers already)
no personal offense intended.
